I believe the reasons why the Reformista movement and Rizal preferred the Philippines to be a province of Spain rather than an independent sovereign state is because they were afraid that the Filipinos could not effectively handle an independence that will be so abruptly obtained. Enrique was born to a Babaylan class family in the Island of Malacca, a sizable kingdom in the Eastern Ocean. Little is known of his early life, for he avoids speaking about it. Whether he had bitter memories of childhood or talking about the past that he so fondly remembers for days spent on the forests, the beach, and the sea, which were the best of his life, saddens him and makes him long it even more, we may never know.
